This twelve week course features guest lectures by colleagues of Nancy's who are experts in specific aspects of fundraising. Participants will complete homework assignments and receive detailed feedback on how to improve their work. Each participant can choose an organization, cause, candidate or political party and will write a finance plan as his/her final project.

Classes begin on February 24 and end on May 12

  • Relationship fundraising and the importance of storytelling
  • How to ask for money -- even if you hate to
  • Working with a Finance Committee/Board to reach goals
  • How to prepare a budget and timeline
  • Direct mail fundraising
  • Events – and how to make them profitable
  • Telemarketing and phone scripts
  • Data management and microtargeting
  • High dollar fundraising
  • Independent expenditures/SuperPacs/Political parties
  • Campaign finance law and the history of campaign finance
  • PAC fundraising best practices for corporate and membership orgs
  • Presidential and convention fundraising
  • Internet strategies/social marketing

Participants will draft and keep these products for their professional use:

  • Major donor research
  • Event plan
  • Direct mail package
  • Telemarketing script
  • Social marketing appeal
  • Final plan (generally a 15 – 30 page project)

Nancy Bocskor is a sought-after speaker and internationally renowned expert in applied democracy. She is a trainer and consultant whose client list includes citizen activists and organizations in the U.S. and abroad. The author of Go Fish: How to Catch (and Keep) Contributors: A Practical Guide to Fundraising,Nancy is a professor at George Washington University’s Graduate School of Political Management where she teaches both online and “live” fundraising courses. Nancy is on the board for Running Start, an organization that encourages young women to run for office, and was a faculty member for Project 2012, a program hosted by the Center for American Women & Politics at Rutgers that recruits women run for public office. Most recently, she joined the advisory board for the Veterans Campaign Workshop, a program that trains veterans for public service. She also served on the board of the Women’s Campaign School at Yale for seven years, where she chaired the school’s Curriculum Committee for five years.
